LED light bulb prices to fall sharply by 2014

An LED (light-emitting diode) is a semiconductor device that emits visible light at a particular wavelength to produce a certain colour of light. LED light bulbs are fundamentally different in the way that they produce light from traditional incumbent light sources such as incandescent, fluorescent, and gas-discharge lamps. An LED does not have a filament nor use gas and does not have fragile glass nor moving parts, making it very robust and durable for extreme environments.

LED light bulbs require only a fraction of the power consumed by traditional incandescent and halogen bulbs and LEDs achieve approximately double the energy efficiency of CFL (compact fluorescent) light sources. In addition to delivering a substantial reduction in electricity bills for businesses and consumers, LED technology clearly presents a green sustainable lighting solution and brings a host of major benefits such as: no mercury content; no IR or UV radiation, very long life-span (minimising maintenance and waste disposal costs); flexibility for digital dynamic control and tunability of light colour; along with other advantages.

Despite the compelling case for widespread adoption of LED technology into mainstream lighting, the rate of proliferation remains relatively low. Though a barrier to adoption of LED lighting is the awareness of the profound advances in LED and SSL (solid state lighting) and associated benefits, the current prices of LED lighting products is still a ‘show-stopper’ for many potential purchasers. However, key drivers are now well in motion to enable major price reductions in LEDs in the near future which is good news for the consumer, business and very importantly – the environment.

The global leaders in advanced LED chip technology such as Cree, Osram and Philips-Lumileds are to an extent combining resources in ways such as patent cross license agreements to accelerate the adoption of LED lighting through advances in fields of LED chip materials science, fabrication methods, packaging, LED luminaires & lamps, and also including the development of intelligent LED lighting control systems.

The prominent LED chipmaker BRIDGELUX is achieving ground-breaking advances towards high-volume production of white LEDs through growing GaN (Gallium Nitride) on larger low-cost silicon substrates. This new alternative to current sapphire-based LEDs is expected to generate substantial reductions in manufacturing costs as the new technique is more compatible with abundant capacity of already existing semiconductor fabrications operations around the globe. All of this progress will drive wide open the price-sensitive commercial and residential markets for general lighting over the coming years.
